A pair of semifinalists

Hewlett High School seniors Jake Rabinowitz and Aviv Lipman were named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. Rabinowitz and Lipman both boast weighted GPAs of more than 100, along with being AP scholars with honor.

Rabinowitz’s achievements include registering a perfect 800 on the chemistry SAT subject test and earning Regents mastery in physics before taking the course. He is a member of the Foreign Language Honor Society and National Honor Society.

In school, he is an active member of Hewlett’s Wind Ensemble and Music Theory program and received the Music Department award. Off campus he volunteers as a Math Peer tutor and a mentor at SIBS Place, a program of South Nassau Communities Hospital. His piano pieces have received outstanding evaluations from NYSSMA and had artwork displayed in an exhibition.

Lipman has received Department Awards in several subject areas, in 2009 and `10 was the winner of the French Poetry Competition and captured first place in Nassau County on the National French exam this June.

A Long Island Science Congress finalist, he participated in the DuPont Challenge, a Siemens Westinghouse semifinalist, a member of the Long Island Challenge team and scored a perfect 2400 SAT score the first time he took the test. He is a four-year swimmer and earned All-Division relay honors this year and volunteers as a tutor, at the library and as giving Red Cross swimming lessons.
