Earning the rank of Eagle Scout, the Boy Scouts’ highest honor, rates a celebration and Woodmere’s Andrew Mermelstein achievement was celebrated during a Court of Honor held at Young Israel of Woodmere on March 4.

Mermelstein and his father Steve, who is his troop master, helped establish Troop 613, which is based out of the Woodmere shul. It is the only Orthodox Jewish Boy Scout troop on Long Island.

In addition to earning more than 20 Boy Scout badges, Eagle Scouts must complete a community service oriented project. Mermelstein, a senior at Davis Renoir Stahler Yeshiva High School for Boys in Wood-

mere, reorganized and remodeled Young Isr-

ael’s library.

His future plans include studying in Israel after his graduation from high school, then returning home to major in engineering at either Queens College or Yeshiva University.
