DWI conviction

MINEOLA-Gehlert Barrios, 21, of Far Rockaway, was sentenced on Dec. 1 to two to six years for manslaughter-second degree, driving while intoxicated and two misdemeanor counts of assault-third degree for the Jan. 30 vehicular crash in Cedarhurst that killed his passenger and injured two other men.

Barrios was driving his Nissan at a high rate of speed on Rockaway Turnpike near Rugby Road when he collided with a Ford van that slowed to make a right turn in front of him.

The crash’s impact killed Barrios’s friend, Anthony Morales, 30, who was a passenger in the back seat. The front seat passenger in Barrios’s car and the van driver both suffered neck and back injuries.

“This easily preventable tragedy could have been avoided if the defendant had simply called a cab or given his keys to a sober drivers,” said Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice. “But instead, he recklessly chose to get behind the wheel and killed an innocent man.”
