Four people from Woodmere rescued from boat fire

Four people from Woodmere and two dogs were rescued from a 52-foot vessel that caught on fire on the Long Island Sound Saturday.

According to Southold Town police, the fire started at 3:51 p.m. where two 63-year-olds and two 24-year-olds were aboard the vessel. 

On the VHF channel 16, a "mayday" call was transmitted about a "boat in distress" on the Sound. 

The Southold Town police department's marine patrol responded to the call which included the Orient Fire Department, the United States Coast Guard, Sea Tow and Connecticut agencies.

The  Old Saybrook Fire Department boarded the vessel and took out the smoke and fire. The Sea Tow towed the vessel, the police department's marine unit brought rescued those on board and refused medical treatment, police said. 

The cause of the fire is unknown.
