Four groups of Hebrew Academy of Long Beach eighth-graders advanced from the Long Island History Day competition to the New York State History Day contest. Under the guidance of social studies teacher Kristen Waterman, 18 students involved with a quartet of projects excelled.

Seven of the nine of groups from HALB that took part in the Long Island event placed within the top six. The students collaborated on the projects within the past five months conducting in-depth research.

Because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the competitions are being held online. Participants uploaded their project onto the History Day website. The projects examine historical events and how they relate to a specific them.

This school year’s theme is Debate and Diplomacy: Successes, Failures and Consequences. Students reviewed eras stretching from the American Industrial Revolution to the 1970s.

The New York State History Day competition will also take place virtually this month. Winners advance to the National History Day contest, online as well, June 12 to 16.
