Athletes such as Spud Webb, Emmitt Smith and Manny Pacquiao have demonstrated that heart can overcome a lack of height.

North Woodmere resident Jamie Diluzio, an eighth grader at Lawrence Middle, who stands at a whopping 4-foot-11 and is a force to be reckoned with.

During this spring track season, Diluzio ran the 800 meter and 1,500 meter events and placed in each and every meet. His fastest time in the 800m was 2.27 and 5.041 for the 1,500m.

Yet, this wasn’t the first athletic accomplishment for Diluzio this past school year. He scored an outstanding eight goals as an attacking midfield and forward soccer player. According to his coach, other teams referred to him as “Messi,” comparing his athletic abilities to that of professional soccer player Lionel Messi.

“Jamie is an exceptional long distance runner with great endurance and determination,” said George Klein, the middle school’s boys track and field coach “He runs with a mission … not to win, but to push himself to be better each time.”

Klein projects Diluzio to become a premier high school distance runner. Just remember the old saying: “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.”
