The Sewanhaka Central High School District, one of the largest school districts in Nassau County, passed its 2011-12 budget last week, with 4,628 votes supporting it and 3,028 opposing it. This year’s turnout of 7,656 voters was significantly lower than last year, when nearly 10,000 people voted on the current school spending plan. more

Grammar –– practicing what you’ve learned
“Yikes!” said Little Orphan Annie in excitement. “Yikes!” says the Principal’s Office. My recent column “Beating three common writing errors” drew more feedback than usual. It’s a pleasant surprise; as I’ve said repeatedly over the past six years, the value of writing good English has declined, but readers seem intrigued by the “writing quiz” feature that I sprinkle in several times a year. Several voters came to the Washington Street School, at 760 Washington St. in Franklin Square, just before the polls closed at 9 p.m. on Tuesday. 8,907 district residents voted today, and the budget passed by a 360 margin.

The Franklin Square Union Free School District's 2011-12 budget passed today, with 1,134 "yes" votes and 773 "no" votes from voters. 1,907 voters came to the polls today, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., to have their voices heard regarding Franklin Square's budget. more

The Sewanhaka Central High School budget passed this evening, with 4,628 votes in support of the budget, and 3,028 votes against it. This year's turnout — 7,656 voters — was slightly lower than last year's, when nearly 10,000 residents came to the polls to vote for the 2010-11 budget. more

Two Nassau County Police officers revved up the motor on a device not much larger than a lawnmower engine. As the machine roared last Wednesday afternoon, the officers used its cutters to slowly peel off the driver’s side door of a badly damaged minivan. No one was inside the van, but students at Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville watched quietly and anxiously as the “Jaws of Life” crushed the car’s metal. more

Hofstra journalism students take a hike to learn about science reporting
Eight Hofstra University graduate journalism students from Professor Scott Brinton’s Current Issues in Science Reporting class recently participated in and are reporting on an Envirothon that took place in the woodlands around the Meadowbrook Parkway in North Merrick, Roosevelt and Freeport on April 30. Brinton, of Merrick, is a senior editor and op-ed columnist with Herald Community Newspapers. The Nassau County Unprotected Woodlands Taskforce, headed by county Legislators David Denenberg and Norma Gonsalves, organized the event. more
