Businesses slowly recover after Sandy

Rolling River Day Camp sits on five acres along Mill River, which snakes through East Rockaway and Bay Park on the way to East Rockaway Channel. The river can be a friend. It forms an idyllic backdrop for a camp replete with swimming pools, playgrounds and ball fields. It can also be a foe. During a nor’easter in 2010, Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the river inundated much of the camp, wreaking havoc. more

Connie Roberts, of Merrick, who lived for a time in Bellmore, recently published her first poetry collection, “Little Witness,” to much acclaim. It describes a harrowing childhood at one of Ireland’s notorious industrial schools.

Poetry reveals a child’s torment

Each night as a child, Connie Roberts stroked her white plastic rosary beads, recited her prayers and curled up in her comfortless bed at the Mount Carmel Industrial School for Girls, in Ireland’s Midlands region. She often heard screams echo through the cavernous institution. Now 52, Roberts can still hear them in her head. They were, she said, “the worst.” more

Jake Thomas was named to the Nassau County All-Star team in 2011, among other achievements during his Calhoun High School baseball career.

Calhoun baseball alumni drafted by MLB teams

Jake Thomas and Alex Vargas, both 21, played baseball together in 2011 at Calhoun High School under legendary coach Joe Corea. In 2010, Thomas led the Colts squad that captured the Nassau County Class AA title. In 2012, Vargas played a critical role in the Colts’ victory at the Long Island Class AA championship. Major League teams recently drafted them both. more
