A warm Saturday afternoon set the tone at Elmont American Legion Riders Post 1033, where the group hosted its annual Bike Blessing, bringing together riders, veterans and community members from across Nassau County and the Long Island region for a day centered on tradition, fellowship and service.

Sal Martella, 79, started the Elmont riders 14 years ago as the first member.

Motorcycles had lined the post grounds and the street as riders continued to arrive throughout the afternoon on May 16. The community gathered outside for a grill lunch, connecting with fellow riders and supporters in a relaxed, community-focused setting.

Kadeem M. Brown, a candidate for Nassau County Legislature, and Nassau County Legislator John Giuffre attended the blessing in support of the riders, veterans and community members in attendance. Nassau County Comptroller Elaine Phillips also was present, showing her support for the event and those gathered.

Chris Beckhans, president of Long Island ABATE, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on motorcycle safety, rider education and advocacy, said the organization continues to promote rider rights, oppose legislation viewed as unfair to motorcyclists and support charitable initiatives benefiting veterans and local community programs. He spoke about its ongoing mission to protect riders while expanding outreach and fundraising efforts.

Members of the Fighters of Fire Motorcycle Club also took part in the blessing. The club, composed of active and retired firefighters and other emergency responders from Nassau County and the New York area, emphasized community service and a shared passion for motorcycling.

Dawn Samuel and Debbie Tierman are the only women riders with the Elmont Post 1033 American Legion Riders. Both have been riding for several years and said they continue to value the experience, especially as part of a small group of women within the post’s riding community.
