Republican John Giuffré held a commanding lead over Democrat Nadia Holubnyczyj on Tuesday evening in the race for the open 8th district seat in the Nassau County Legislature.

According to early results tabulated by the Nassau County Board of Elections on Tuesday night, Giuffré had 9,940 votes and Holubnyczyj had 3,967 votes. The Republican candidate Giuffré led the Democratic candidate Holubnyczyj 71 percent to 29 percent.

If elected, Giuffré would be the first person to represent the 8th legislative district other than the current representative, Vincent Muscarella, who has held the seat since the legislature's inaugural session in 1995.

Holubnyczyj, 53, a community advocate from Floral Park, has served at the helm of various Nassau civic organizations. More recently, she raised large sums of funds for county residents in need during the height of the coronavirus pandemic.

A lawyer from Stewart Manor, Giuffré, 57, said he would direct federal funds to increase vaccination and promote booster shots and equip local businesses with touchless technologies and better air filters. He also has stressed the need to balance the county budget and reign in government spending but vowed to allocate funds to education and other areas.

Giuffré emphasizes the need to lower Nassau property taxes and is open to reassessing property values. He particularly has pointed out million-dollar mansions that faced what he said are low property taxes following the latest reassessment.

Absentee ballots are yet to be counted. All results are unofficial as of print time.
