Police update search for hit-and-run driver

Early 90's Buick killed Franklin Square man

Nassau County police announced last week that after discovering evidence at the scene of a fatal hit-and-run in Franklin Square, they now know what kind of vehicle the perpetrator was driving.

Police are asking residents to be on the lookout for a 1991-1996 Buick Century, possibly with front-end damage as a result of striking a man on a motorcycle.

On Sunday, Nov. 29, John Deiker of Franklin Square was riding his motorcycle just steps from his home near Rath Park. As he drove into the intersection at the corner of Naple Avenue, traveling northbound on Commonwealth Street, he was struck by the Buick and thrown from his motorcycle.

Deiker was not wearing a motorcycle helmet, according to police, and had clearly suffered serious injuries when police responded to 911 calls at the scene. When police arrived, they found Deiker in the street next to his 2004 Honda motorcycle. A police ambulance was dispatched to the scene and took Deiker to nearby Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. Despite receiving treatment, Deiker's injuries were too severe, and he succumbed to them at approximately 12:30 p.m.

At a press conference last week, police gave few details with regard to the accident, saying only that they had collected evidence from the scene and were hopeful that an eyewitness would come forward with more solid information.

As of yet, police are still working from the assumption that neighbors heard, but did not see the incident.

"Numerous people heard the crash, no one necessarily saw it," said Det. John DeMartinez of the Nassau County Police Department homicide squad. "We're asking any witnesses who might have seen the incident to please contact the homicide squad or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS."

At this time, police cannot rule out alcohol or dangerous speed as a factor in the incident.

The intersection where the accident occurred has gained a reputation in the community for being an area where drivers speed and roll through stop signs.

The fear of an incident like a hit-and-run was strong, not just because of the area's reputation, but also its proximity to the popular Rath Park.

Investigators have asked anyone who might have any information about the incident to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS (8477). All calls will be kept confidential.
