Elmont’s call for a community center

Posted

Now, more than ever, our community stands at the precipice of transformation. The vision of a comprehensive community center in Elmont is possible. It is imperative for every resident to participate in this collective process. Stand with us as we work toward building a vibrant, thriving community center that embodies the very essence of Elmont’s spirit.

During the negotiations for the redevelopment of Belmont Park, thanks to our advocacy, the community-benefits agreement required the developer, New York Arena Partners, to secure and build a space within the hamlet of Elmont to serve as a community center. Unfortunately — years later — very little progress has been made. So the Elmont community is taking a stand to say we cannot continue to wait any longer. We need a community center now.

The community-benefits agreement with NYAP and Empire State Development was a testament to the power of collective advocacy. As a community, we want to be a model for how developers and communities can work hand in hand, recognizing that sustainable progress is rooted in collaboration and mutual respect.

This relationship is not merely transactional; it’s a collaboration beyond bricks and mortar. It’s about co-creating spaces that reflect the needs, dreams and values of the people they serve. Developers are pivotal in turning the community’s vision into a tangible reality.

As we envision a new community center, I hope it becomes a place where diverse interests converge, whether through art studios that spark creativity or communal spaces that encourage shared learning. During the coronavirus pandemic, Elmont High School became a vital hub for food distribution, showcasing the potential of community spaces to address immediate needs.

Ensuring the well-being and growth of our youth is also of paramount importance. The community center shouldn’t be merely a building; it should be a sanctuary where young people can gather and flourish. Within that space, mentorship, tutoring and impactful programs will be offered, nurturing the potential of our emerging leaders.

Furthermore, a community center should give residents the chance to acquire new skills and participate in job development programs. It can become a focal point for initiatives, enabling people to enhance their skill sets and bolster their confidence. Creating additional pathways to careers will stimulate the local economy and offer residents convenient access to training opportunities close to home. By leveraging public-private partnerships, the community can transform the space into potential apprenticeship or certification opportunities, benefiting a new generation of workers.

Another focus could be promoting healthier lifestyles in Elmont. This effort could go beyond providing quality exercise equipment, to introducing nutrition seminars and cooking classes. And this vision is not exhaustive, because the community will take part in shaping and conceptualizing a space that goes beyond the conventional community center. We will adopt a holistic approach, considering the varied needs of all members of our community. The aim is to create a space where people of all ages and abilities can engage in activities that enhance their health and well-being.

As the representative of the 22nd Assembly District, I wholeheartedly invite residents to join the movement for the Elmont Community Center. Together we have the power to turn aspirations into foundations, and to create a hub that fulfills our needs and becomes a multigenerational haven. Get involved in the planning process by sharing your vision for the center.

Elevating the quality of life for our residents isn’t just a wish; it’s a mission. The Elmont community deserves a haven for camaraderie, access to resources, and technical assistance. This initiative is not just timely; it’s long awaited, and I am fully committed to working with residents to turn this collective dream into a reality.

I am determined to work as well with local leaders and NYAP to make it happen. With everyone working together and supporting the cause, we will see the community center come to life. This facility will benefit all of us, making our community stronger and more connected.
