Mayor Pamela Panzenback and the Glen Cove City Council announced today the start of the warning period of its school bus stop-arm camera program to protect children from motorists illegally passing  stopped school busses. The 30-day warning period starts the second week of November, and will end mid December. After the warning period, motorists can expect a $250 fine for the first offense, and a $275 fine for the second offense.

The program is in partnership with BusPatrol, a provider of school bus safety programs. This upgrade includes stop-arm cameras to help communities enforce school bus-stopping laws, which capture the license plates of vehicles that violate these laws.

“This partnership between the Glen Cove Police Department and BusPatrol will enable us to leverage our traditional enforcement efforts with their technology in order to better serve the community and keep our children safe and enforcing the laws when it pertains to people passing school busses, when they're stopped,” Glen Cove Police Chief William Whitton said. “What we want to do is change driver behavior, because ultimately, the goal here is to keep our roadways safe for our children to be able to traverse them and come home safely at the end of the day."
