Lynbrook approves new pedestrian warning signs on Hempstead Avenue

Lynbrook officials are moving ahead with new pedestrian warning signs along Hempstead Avenue after determining that a requested crosswalk near a local gym would not be feasible.

Police Chief Brian Paladino told the village board Aug. 24 that officials had received a request for a crosswalk in the area, where pedestrians frequently cross the busy roadway.

“I don’t think that’s going to work,” Paladino said of installing a crosswalk. “It’s not really an intersection for that.”

Instead, Paladino proposed installing pedestrian warning signs without markings indicating an official crosswalk.

“There are a lot of people that cross there, and they’re not going to go down to the crosswalk,” Paladino said. “There is a lot of pedestrian traffic across there.”

Officials discussed placing signs near Ready Coffee and around 220 Hempstead Ave. before approving the proposal.
