Members of the Lynbrook High School Key Club came out to support their adviser, Dr. Ben Tieniber, as he was honored at the Lynbrook Mayor’s Golf Outing on Aug. 17.
Tieniber was one of three honorees recognized during the annual fundraiser, which was held at Inwood Country Club and Seawane Club and benefited the Lynbrook Community Chest and other local causes.
“It’s a pleasure to be honored with two other great honorees,” Tieniber said. “Additionally, being able to follow in Dr. Lynch’s footsteps after he was honored last year is pretty remarkable.”
Tieniber has taught at Lynbrook High School for nine years and advises the school’s Key Club, a student service organization affiliated with Kiwanis. He also serves as vice president of the Lynbrook Kiwanis Club and has been involved in numerous student and community service initiatives.
For Tieniber, that involvement is rooted in making sure residents know they have support when they need it.
“It’s important the community knows that they have someone, a club, to lean on when things are tough,” he said. “Lynbrook is a special place to work.”
Key Club members attended the outing not only to celebrate their adviser, but also to lend a hand with the day’s fundraising efforts. Students split into groups at the two golf courses to help raise money for Kiwanis and the community.
“We’re here with Dr. T. Congratulations to him,” Key Club member Arianna Lanzello said. “We split up into two groups at both clubs and helped to raise money for Kiwanis and our community.”
Tieniber said working with students through Key Club has reinforced his belief that community service is a collective effort.
“Our students are so amazing here,” he said. “They truly want to make a difference in our community. There is no ‘I’ in team, and it’s a group effort.”
That spirit of service also connects Tieniber to the mission of the Mayor’s Golf Outing, whose proceeds are directed primarily to the Lynbrook Community Chest to help local residents facing financial hardships.
“What I love about the Mayor’s outing is the mission,” Tieniber said. “They help support those in need locally.”
Tieniber was named the Lynbrook Chamber of Commerce’s Educator of the Year in 2024 and the Business Teachers Association of New York State’s Business Teacher of the Year in 2025.
As his students joined him at the outing, Tieniber said he hopes they see community service as something that extends beyond their time in school.
“It’s important our students learn and experience how service can make a difference,” he said.
Their presence at the outing reflected that lesson in action, as students celebrated their adviser while continuing the service work for which he was being recognized.
