In a quiet corner of the main gymnasium at Nassau Community College’s athletic center in Garden City, where basketball games and wrestling matches are normally held, Red Cross volunteers have fashioned a small, makeshift daycare center out of room dividers, pinning up newsprint where children can draw pictures in crayon. There are books for reading as well, but little else.

Part one in a series on how South Shore residents are coping in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. This week we begin in Bellmore-Merrick. In subsequent weeks we plan to spotlight recovery efforts in other communities.
John Giammarino’s one-level house stood near the intersection of Bellmore Avenue and Clubhouse Road for 30 years. But only three years after the south Bellmore resident began renting the waterfront home, his landlord sent crews to rip out what was left of the walls.

With its raging floodwaters and fierce winds that gusted up to 85 miles per hour, Hurricane Sandy severely tested the Merrick Fire Department, but according to department spokesman Ron Luparello, Merrick’s bravest weathered the storm, aiding countless residents as they struggled to stay afloat in what many described as the “storm of the century.”

Over half the reported hazardous material spills on Long Island after Hurricane Sandy have been reported in Nassau County, according to New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) officials said.

Weary homeowners battered by Hurricane Sandy began to trickle into the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s mobile Disaster Recovery Center at Nassau Community College’s Student Union, a red-brick building on the west side of the campus, when it opened last Friday. The center was set up to help homeowners who suffered losses in the massive storm to file for grants that will enable them to rebuild.

A week after Hurricane Sandy lashed the South Shore with a 10-foot storm surge and hurricane-force wind gusts, Long Island Power Authority officials said on Nov. 5 that the utility had restored power to 675,000 of the 1.2 million customers who lost their electricity in the storm. But the majority of Bellmore-Merrick residents south of Merrick Road were not among those to get their lights back on, even though many, if not most, parts the Bellmores and Merricks north of Merrick Road had electricity.
