Young hoopsters from throughout the area gathered at Curé of Ars Roman Catholic Church on Jan. 24 for the 2010 Knights of Columbus International Free Throw Contest, sponsored locally by the Father Jeremiah J. Reilly Council. The children battled it out to represent the council and community in district and county shootouts, with Jennifer Imhoff, Nicole Imhoff, Kim Pike, Jaclyn Zanella, John Timothy and Patrick Horn being named this year's champs. The next stop for the victorious bunch will be the district shootout on Jan. 31. more

Federal stimulus money allowed Bellmore-Merrick school districts to patch holes in their budgets caused by state aid cuts last spring, but that may not be the case entirely this year. In December, the cash-strapped state used part of its 2010-11 federal stimulus money to prevent midyear reductions in state aid for education in the current school year, said Matt Anderson, a state Budget Office spokesman. more

The North Merrick Community Association gathered at the group's new monthly meeting spot, the North Merrick Library, on Jan. 20. Previously, meetings were held at the Merrick Park Golf Course Clubhouse, south of Sunrise Highway. The location shift brings the monthly meetings closer to neighborhoods served by the North Merrick Community Association. more
Peter Holmstedt of Holm's Citgo on Merrick Avenue in Merrick donated nearly $2,000 to the Community Wellness Council of the Bellmores and Merricks, Inc. The council's goal is to prevent substance abuse in the community and to improve quality of life by fostering physical and emotional wellness. Seventh-graders at Sacred Heart School in North Merrick recently collected gently used blankets and coats for the homeless. The coats and blankets were donated to the Mary Brennan Inn for distribution to those in need. more
Four young people escaped serious injury and possible death when the car they were riding in lost control and skidded a considerable distance, overturned and slammed into a tree on the Meadowbrook Parkway just north of Babylon Turnpike on Friday, Jan. 22. The four were trapped inside until members of the Merrick Fire Department and State Police were able to remove them through one of the car doors. more
The Merrick Fire Dept. installed its new chiefs at its 86th annual Installation Dinner on Jan. 23 at the Chateau Briand restaurant. The chiefs were sworn in by New York State David McDonough.
