The North Merrick Community Association gathered at the group's new monthly meeting spot, the North Merrick Library, on Jan. 20. Previously, meetings were held at the Merrick Park Golf Course Clubhouse, south of Sunrise Highway. Seventh-graders at Sacred Heart School in North Merrick recently collected gently used blankets and coats for the homeless. The coats and blankets were donated to the Mary Brennan Inn for distribution to those in need. more
Four young people escaped serious injury and possible death when the car they were riding in lost control and skidded a considerable distance, overturned and slammed into a tree on the Meadowbrook Parkway just north of Babylon Turnpike on Friday, Jan. 22. The four were trapped inside until members of the Merrick Fire Department and State Police were able to remove them through one of the car doors. more
The Merrick Fire Dept. installed its new chiefs at its 86th annual Installation Dinner on Jan. 23 at the Chateau Briand restaurant. The chiefs were sworn in by New York State David McDonough. Last Friday, I saw the flashing lights of a police car shining into our living room window. I looked out and saw a police officer and two other men who had gotten out of their cars, all trying to entice a large and frightened dog. I suspect they were trying to read his collar, which told us that he belonged to someone and could be far away from home. more
