The most stunning image I saw in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy was a YouTube video of a huge carp hanging from a pole in the parking lot of the Woodmere Middle School on Peninsula Boulevard.

I always thought it was cliché to say, “I’ve never seen anything like it,” but in the aftermath of Sandy, I can honestly say that, in my lifetime, I’ve never seen anything like it.

There comes a moment in a monster hurricane such as Sandy when you question why you live on Long Island, this 118-mile-long spit of glacial debris deposited in the Atlantic Ocean from the mainland 20,000 years ago.
