When people think about Thanksgiving, the first thing that comes to mind is likely a relaxing day with family — and a lot of good food, of course. But on Nov. 23, dozens of people woke up early and made their way to Gries Park to fill their hearts before their plates. The 5k turkey trot held on Thanksgiving morning was a success. The race was organized by Mended Little Hearts of Long Island, which focuses on providing resources to children and families affected by congenital heart defects, which are the most common birth defect in the country. The organization also focuses on education and awareness for such conditions. The proceeds from the race will help pediatric cardiology patients at New York Presbyterian Hospital. The racers celebrated the true spirit of Thanksgiving — being grateful for what you’re given, and giving back where you can.
