South Side High School students brought the razzle-dazzle of “Chicago” to the stage in Rockville Centre, performing a teen edition of the iconic musical from March 25 through March 28.

Set in the 1920s, “Chicago” follows Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly as they turn scandal into stardom with the help of a savvy lawyer. Featuring jazz-driven numbers and sharp satire, the show explores fame, media, and ambition.

The production offered a rare opportunity for students to perform a show still running on Broadway, with six roles — including Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly — double-cast to showcase student talent.

The cast delivered energetic performances featuring classic songs and choreography, reflecting months of rehearsal and collaboration among students and faculty.

“The resulting performances are the culmination of months of student-centered learning and collaboration,” said Kathleen Mark, director of the arts. “From the cast to the pit musicians, stage management team, crew, and lighting and sound operators, our students are learning real-world skills that can be applied in both collegiate and professional settings.”

Rockville Centre schools have a longstanding focus on theater education, including offering the International Baccalaureate theater curriculum.

Drama Guild productions extend that training beyond the classroom, with students involved in all aspects of the show — from the cast and pit musicians to stage management, crew, and lighting and sound.

The program also maintains strong alumni ties. Lighting designer Emma Wills-Umdenstock, a 2019 South Side graduate, returned to support the production after discovering her interest in lighting design as a student.

“The theater community at SSHS is tight-knit and supportive,” Mark said. “Under the guidance of our dedicated teachers, students are thriving and giving the Rockville Centre community a wonderful opportunity to gather and celebrate their performances.”
