Michael Rechter, DDS, is stepping away from a 44-year career in dentistry and nearly four decades serving Rockville Centre patients, closing a chapter that helped shape generations of smiles while opening a new one for the practice he spent years building.
Rechter, 69, is retiring this month after 38 years in Rockville Centre, where he transformed a small dental office into what is now Long Island Dental Excellence on North Centre Avenue. While he said the decision was difficult, he felt the time was right to pursue photography, travel and spend more time with family, including his grandchildren.
“It's the long-term relationships that I've had with people,” he said. “I've literally had patients with me since day one. It's really a relationship. I'm so grateful,” Rechter said.
A graduate of Columbia University School of Dental Medicine, Rechter completed a residency at Englewood Hospital in New Jersey before working in several associate positions. In the late 1980s, he took over a long-established Rockville Centre practice and steadily expanded it from a one-doctor office with a small staff into a thriving multi-doctor practice.
Throughout his career, Rechter embraced advances in dental technology, becoming an early adopter of digital radiology and same-day crown technology. He said innovations in dental materials and imaging dramatically changed the profession, but he always viewed patient trust and comprehensive care as the foundation of good dentistry.
As he prepares to step away, Rechter has spent the past year carefully transitioning the practice to Dr. Michael Heiss, a South Shore native who will assume leadership of the office.
“It's a very personalized practice, one-on-one, and I really wanted to find an individual to be able to take care of my patients and take care of my staff,” Rechter said. “That's just as important.”
Heiss, 29, grew up in Long Beach, attended college at Binghamton University and earned his dental degree from Touro College of Dental Medicine before completing a hospital-based residency at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. After opening his own office in Oceanside, he began searching for an opportunity that aligned with his long-term vision.
“When I finally found his practice, it was so well-run, such a great location,” Heiss said. “The team is incredible. I had to jump on it, and I'm thankful I did. I think it's the best decision I've ever made.”
The two dentists were introduced through a professional connection and met at the Rockville Centre office last summer. Both said they immediately recognized a shared philosophy centered on comprehensive, relationship-based care.
One of Heiss' primary goals during the transition has been maintaining continuity for patients and staff members who have spent years with Rechter.
“I bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm, but I also understand that I have a responsibility to honor the legacy of the practice,” Heiss said.
Rechter is also a freelance photographer for the Herald and said he will continue in that role after retiring from dentistry.
