Rockville Centre Bigelows gain confidence as season progresses

Early-season development is showing up in stronger defensive play and improved fundamentals on the field

The Bigelows Little League squad from the Rockville Centre’s Mort Geller Sevens league have spent the early portion of their season building something more meaningful than wins and losses — they’ve been building confidence, fundamentals, and a growing sense of team identity that is starting to show up every time they take the field.

Now six games into the schedule, the Bigelows are beginning to turn routine practices into game-day execution, a progression head coach Mike Girasole says has been the clearest storyline of the season.

“Over the course of these six games, the kids have shown significant improvement in the field and with basic fundamentals,” he said. “At the beginning of the season, most of the kids were pretty capable with hitting, but over time, they’ve really developed defensively.”

That defensive growth was on full display in the team’s most recent outing on May 30, a game that Girasole pointed to as the clearest snapshot yet of the group’s development. What stood out most wasn’t a highlight-reel home run or a dramatic comeback, but rather the steady, fundamental execution of infield play — the kind that often defines youth baseball development more than the scoreboard.

“Our last game, which was last Saturday, the kids made several plays in the infield that would have gotten the runner out at first,” Girasole said. “Great job fielding ground balls, making the throw to first, and the first baseman finishing the play, which was really great to see.”

One of the key moments came at first base, where Ryan Byrne helped anchor the defense by getting outs that began with clean fielding and accurate throws across the diamond. In a league where consistency is still being learned, those sequences stood out as signs of a team beginning to understand how to work together defensively.
