As part of the village’s ongoing efforts to improve and maintain its parkland, the next phase of planned upgrades along Hempstead Lake State Park has begun.
A village contractor has started restoration work on the Donald Browne Pathway along the lake. During construction, the pathway and the Peninsula Boulevard pedestrian bridges will be closed for several weeks to allow the work to be completed safely and efficiently.
“We’re so excited to get this,” Mayor Francis X. Murray said. “It’s a great improvement to our park, our beautiful parks.”
Murray said the project focuses on restoring a nearly mile-long pathway that runs parallel to Peninsula Boulevard, stretching from Lake Drive North to the area’s soccer, lacrosse and softball fields. The existing path had fallen into significant disrepair, with uneven surfaces and steep dips that made it difficult to navigate safely.
Work is expected to take approximately two to three weeks, weather permitting. During that time, the pedestrian bridges will be closed to accommodate construction equipment and ensure public safety. Access to the park will remain available via the bridge at Lakeside and Broadway.
Murray noted the decision to move forward with the project was made about a year ago as part of broader efforts to improve local park infrastructure. Funding comes from taxpayer-supported capital funds rather than grants, reflecting the village’s direct investment in maintaining and upgrading public spaces.
“The project itself is wonderful,” he said. “It’s a great improvement, and we’re always improving it.”
Once completed, the renovated asphalt pathway is expected to provide a safer and more accessible route for walking and biking.
Murray said the improvements will benefit families, athletes and residents traveling between parking areas and nearby recreational fields, while also encouraging outdoor activity.
The project is part of a broader effort to enhance parks and recreational facilities throughout the village.
Construction began April 13, and village officials said they appreciate the patience and cooperation of residents during the work. They look forward to reopening the improved pathway for public use.
