Dozens of children, teens, family members, volunteers and staff gathered at SIBSPlace in Rockville Centre for the organization's annual moving-up ceremony and prom.
The event on June 11 honored 11 graduates and two mental health interns, who were recognized for reaching important milestones while navigating the challenges of a loved one's serious illness or loss.
The ceremony honored participants whose lives have been affected by a parent, sibling, grandparent or other close relative's cancer or life-threatening illness, as well as those grieving the death of a loved one. Students were recognized for advancing to new grade levels and preparing for new opportunities in the years ahead.
Throughout the year, SIBSPlace offers peer support groups, counseling-based activities and summer camp experiences designed to help children and teens build coping skills, form friendships and connect with others facing similar circumstances. The annual ceremony provides an opportunity to celebrate the progress participants have made both personally and academically.
The moving-up ceremony was held at the organization's Merrick Road facility, where graduates and other program participants were recognized alongside their families, mentors, and supporters.
Before and after the graduation ceremony, attendees enjoyed a prom-style celebration featuring music, dancing and refreshments. The evening brought together children, families, and staff members to commemorate another year of growth, perseverance, and achievement.
