The South Side Middle School sixth-grade winter show brought the Rockville Centre school district’s concert season to a close, capping a series of performances that began across the district in December.

The Jan. 8 concert showcased the talents of the school’s orchestra, band and chorus, highlighting the progress students have made during the early stages of middle school music instruction.

The sixth-grade orchestra, under the direction of Jessica Herman, performed “March of the Metro Gnomes” by Fred Hubbell, “Legend of Dark Mountain” by Soon Hee Newbold, and “Farandole” by Georges Bizet, arranged by Douglas E. Wagner.

Led by band director Danny Pineyro, the sixth-grade band presented “Furioso” by Robert W. Smith, “Rising Star” by Samuel Hazo, and “Winter Winds” by Randall Standridge.

The concert concluded with selections from the sixth-grade chorus, conducted by Anna Elias. The chorus performed “Blue Skies” by Irving Berlin, arranged by Roger Emerson; “Ahe Lau Makani” by Liliʻuokalani, Likelike and Kapoli, arranged by Jerry Depuit; “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” with words by Robert Frost and music by Vera Kistler; and “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield, Danielle Brisebois and Wayne Rodrigues, arranged by Emerson.
