Village of Rockville Centre officials are urging residents to conserve electricity as an extended heat wave is expected to push temperatures into the 90s and higher this week, increasing demand on the local power system.
The Village of Rockville Centre Electric Department said it is closely monitoring system conditions and energy market activity to ensure the most cost-effective approach for the community during periods of elevated usage.
Residents are encouraged to reduce electricity consumption during peak demand hours between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., when strain on the system is highest. Officials noted that even small changes in household habits can help ease demand.
Electric vehicle owners are also asked to charge their vehicles outside of peak hours whenever possible.
Energy-saving recommendations include setting thermostats as high as comfortably possible, regularly changing air conditioner filters to improve efficiency, and keeping curtains and blinds closed during the hottest part of the day.
Officials also advise limiting the use of major appliances such as washers, dryers and dishwashers during peak hours, sealing air leaks around windows and doors with weather stripping, and setting water heaters to no more than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
Village officials emphasized that community-wide conservation efforts can help reduce pressure on the electric system while maintaining reliability and comfort during the heat wave.
