Freeport resident Yves Laurore said he took into two foster care children, both teenagers, who turned on him, threatening him with violence and committing a variety of crimes. Experts say that Laurore’s situation is atypical of the foster care system, but there is growing concern nationwide about safety in the foster care system after two foster parents were allegedly murdered by the children in their care.

Foster care, the joys and dangers

Yves Laurore, a 60-year-old Freeporter and president of YLR Home Improvement, was forewarned by family and friends before becoming a foster parent. Their collective advice was the same: “Kids in the foster care system can’t be trusted. Sooner or later they’ll turn against you.” Laurore, however, was determined to open his home to Long Island children in the foster care system. more

The law firm Davidoff Hutcher & Citron last month sued Dave Denenberg, above, a Nassau County legislator and former DHC partner, for allegedly defrauding a corporate client of $2.3 million. The lawsuit’s parties said the case is now on hold while they negotiate a settlement.

Denenberg case adjourned as parties talk settlement

A judge last week adjourned deadlines for the defense to file legal papers in the case of Davidoff Hutcher & Citron LLP v. David W. Denenberg. The parties said that the judge approved the delay while they negotiate a settlement. more

McDonough, Tumminello vie for 14th Assembly seat

The race for the New York State Legislature’s 14th Assembly District pits the incumbent, Republican David McDonough, of North Merrick, against Gaspare Tumminello, a Democrat from Merrick, who is deputy chief of staff for the Nassau County Legislature’s Democratic minority. Tumminello, a native of Franklin Square, had previously run unsuccessfully for Nassau County legislator in the 8th District in 2009. This year, the Herald asked each of the candidates to fill in a four-question survey about their positions on salient state issues. The 14th Assembly District takes in all or parts of Freeport, Roosevelt, Merrick, North Merrick, Bellmore, North Bellmore, Wantagh, North Wantagh, Seaford and Massapequa. more
