Bogus QR codes vexes Lynbrook parking

Posted

For every action there is a reaction. Using QR codes in most instances are good and easy. In Lynbrook, the use of QR codes showing up on parking meters and signs last week appears to be a scam, village police said.

The fake QR codes were found on Eldert Street and Carpenter Avenue, according to Lynbrook officials. The village does not use QR codes as a method to pay for parking. The meters are pay by phone. When scanned the bogus QR code accessed a website eerily indistinguishable to the village's pay by phone parking website.

Lynbrook police are investigating. Anyone who thinks that they could have been a scam victim should call the village police at (516) 599-3300.
