East Broadway Elementary School recently launched its first schoolwide reading experience, bringing students, staff and families together through a monthlong mystery that celebrated the joy of reading.
Inspired by Levittown Public Schools' #BookLove initiative, East Broadway’s “One Book, One School” adventure set out to build excitement around literacy while creating a shared experience that would connect the entire school community. Throughout October, a committee of educators planned a monthlong mystery book reveal, challenging students to uncover the title through a series of clues.
During library visits, students analyzed hints and worked together to solve the mystery. Additional clues were shared during morning announcements, while a series of social media posts encouraged families to participate from home and sparked conversations about reading beyond the classroom.
The suspense culminated during a special assembly, where students discovered that “The Wild Robot” would be East Broadway’s first shared reading selection of the year. To make the occasion even more memorable, art teacher Ms. Briskin transformed the gym into an enchanting forest inspired by the novel’s setting, creating a magical atmosphere as students entered.
The event continued with a special reading by Deputy Superintendent Beth Zirogiannis, who introduced the book and kicked off the school’s shared reading journey by reading the opening chapters aloud.
The “One Book, One School” initiative was the result of extensive collaboration among East Broadway staff members, who worked together to create a memorable literacy experience for students. By bringing learners together around a shared text, the program supports Levittown Public Schools’ commitment to fostering a lifelong love of reading while strengthening connections across the school community.
