Five Seaford High School sophomores will join students from across the region this spring at a conference aimed at nurturing the next generation of leaders.
Catherine Clasen, Morgan DaSilva, Jimmy Hurson, Finley Kirrane and Luciana Sacco were selected to attend the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar, which will take place June 5–7 at Adelphi University.
The students were among nine Seaford nominees chosen by teachers. After writing essays and interviewing with a school-based committee — made up of administrators, guidance counselors, teachers and past HOBY participants — the five were selected based on leadership potential and school involvement.
“It’s an honor, and I’m really happy I got chosen,” Clasen, the sophomore class president and a member of Best Buddies, varsity field hockey and JV lacrosse said. “I know I have leadership qualities, but there’s a lot more I can learn.”
The HOBY seminar will feature workshops led by professionals in business, government and education, and focus on real-world challenges facing leaders today.
Finley, the class secretary and Drama Club member, said he hopes to apply what he learns to both school and life. “I want to get a better understanding of what leadership is,” he said.
Other participants are just as eager to grow. Hurson, who plays lacrosse and soccer, said, “In sports, every team needs a leader.” Sacco said she hopes to return with lessons she can share with classmates. DaSilva, a cheerleader and peer tutor, said she felt grateful her efforts were recognized.
Seaford High School has participated in HOBY for several years, using the conference to help students step into leadership roles as upperclassmen.
