Wantagh Middle School library has a global reach

A new library more than 7,000 miles from Long Island will have new books and supplies thanks to students at Wantagh Middle School. A fundraiser on Dec. 13 raised more than $250 for the Umoja Partnership, an organization that provides educational opportunities to orphans and vulnerable children in Kenya.

Sixth, seventh and eighth graders were invited to an afterschool fundraiser in the library, and a $5 ticket got them a bead kit, coloring activities, snacks and hot chocolate. Each student was able to make one bracelet using hand-painted beads that were made from recycled linen. Additionally, students could purchase more pre-made bracelets.

The event was hosted by the library in partnership with the Class of 2029, advised by Bonnie Hersch and Amelie Weber. It was attended by 46 students, according to Ms. Weber, the middle school librarian.

“It’s important for students to learn about the world around them,” Weber said. “As their school librarian, I want them to realize how lucky they are, because not all kids in the world have libraries.”

All money raised will support a new library that was constructed in Kenya by the Umoja Partnership.
