Members of Freeport High School’s Class of 2026 proudly walked across the stage during their commencement ceremonies at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex at Hofstra University on June 25.
A total of 555 students were a part of the high school’s 133rd graduating class.
The Class of 2026 was led by valedictorian Mia Martini, salutatorian Ava Smith and class president Angel Omokeni, all three of whom proved themselves to be adept in academics, as well as quality leaders and standout student athletes in various sports. Martini and Smith told the Herald previously that they plan to attend college, with Sacred Heart University and University of Massachusetts Amherst as their top choices respectively. Omokeni has received at least four district scholarships to attend college as well.
In addition to Omokeni, class officers were comprised of Lordia Bossman, vice president; Alyssa Donnelly, secretary; Abigial Hernandez, treasurer; and Alyssa Majano, student government representative.
The Class of 2026 is also filled with students who have exhibited great promise based on their grades and character, with nearly 150 students receiving over 250 awards and scholarships combined for their classroom accomplishments and extracurricular contributions. Besides the school district, local organizations and businesses like the Freeport Police Benevolent Association, the Freeport Memorial Library, Gala Foods Supermarkets and the Freeport-Merrick Rotary Club gave out awards and scholarships.
A large portion of the class plans to attend a community college, university or trade school in the near future to continue their studies and later hope to obtain successful and rewarding careers.
Some of the common schools of choice for graduating students include Adelphi University, CUNY’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Electrical Training Center, Hofstra University, Molloy University, Nassau Community College, SUNY Albany, SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Farmingdale, and SUNY Old Westbury.
In addition, four graduating students — Anthony Hankins, Diana Mejia Villalobos, Wilson Pacheco and Avriel Ramos-Lopesa — are planning to enlist in the U.S. Army.
Among the many supporters present for the commencement ceremony were Shakirah Miller, interim schools superintendent, and Gisselle Campbell-Ham, the high school’s principal.
While this was Miller’s first Freeport High School graduation, this marked Campbell-Ham’s last as principal, since she decided to leave the school district after this school year. She held the position for five years. Shomari Akil officially will assume her position, effective July 1.
