Heart disease survivor Santina Guarcello-Hunt and others were joined by Mount Sinai South Nassau staff members and visitors for the hospital’s annual “Go Red for Women Day” celebration on Feb. 7. The event advocated and promoted heart health and prevention of cardiovascular disease in women.
Guarcello-Hunt, hospital visitors and employees dressed in red for the hospital’s traditional “healthy heart” photo to commemorate the event, which was highlighted by free blood pressure screenings, samplings of tasty heart healthy soups, salads and desserts and information on heart disease prevention and tips to quit smoking.
National Wear Red Day is recognized annually on the first Friday of February to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease and to save lives. According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year. By comparison, 1 in 31 American women dies from breast cancer each year.
