A man was struck by an eastbound Long Island Rail Road train in Rockville Centre Tuesday morning, disrupting Babylon Branch service and causing delays for commuters.

According to police radio communications, the train engineer reported that the person had jumped in front of the train at approximately 6:56 a.m.. Responding officers found the person beneath the second or third train car.

The person was responsive when police reached the scene, according to dispatch communications. Moments later, emergency responders  removed the man from beneath the train and took him to a waiting ambulance.

He was taken to Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital, according to village officials, and his condition is not immediately known.

Joel Diaz described what his son experienced aboard the train in a Facebook post.

“My son was on that train heading to Babylon," he wrote. "He told me he felt a thump and then heard screaming from some of the passengers. Then he saw two stretchers with emergency personnel on the scene."

The incident forced the LIRR to operate trains on one of two tracks through Rockville Centre. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority reported heavy delays along the Babylon Branch, with several trains running between 15 and 45 minutes late. Some eastbound trains were held at Rockville Centre and Jamaica, while a westbound train was held at Babylon.

Normal service has since been restored, according to the MTA web site.
