Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen Students Learn Wellness Lesson

Posted

Students from each of the four elementary schools in the Valley Stream Union Free School District Thirteen learned a lesson on healthy living and wellness from Valley Stream North High School juniors.

The 11th-graders, who were volunteering their time as part of Valley Stream North’s Physical Education Leadership Program, taught Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen’s second-graders about fitness and health. A presentation at Howell Road School was made about the five major food groups and the importance of exercise and eating well. In addition, a station was set up where younger students were able to observe the amount of sugar commonly found in soda.

The “Healthy Living” program offered high school students the opportunity to gain leadership skills and share their expertise while putting Valley Stream’s younger students on the path to positive eating and fitness habits. Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen’s second-graders learned the importance of a balanced diet, and that too much sugar intake may cause cavities along with other health-related issues. The students at Howell Road School also learned how to stay fit by enjoying an active lifestyle and exercising.
