Uniondale High School embraced the Halloween spirit

Ghouls, goblins, and great times filled the hallways of Uniondale high school this Halloween as students, teachers, and administrators came together for a spook-tacular day.

Since the reins over the high school three years ago, Principal Mark McCaw has been an advocate for students in many different ways — including making sure they belong to an active, accepting, challenging, fun, and safe learning environment.

To fully incorporate this, McCaw embraced the holiday spirit by allowing students to dress up for Halloween since taking over, something that was not previously allowed in the district. "We've got too much trauma in this neighborhood not to have fun and celebrate the good times when we can," McCaw said when explaining why he changed the rule.

Students seemed to agree as the school's warm embrace of Halloween provided a safe space for them to let loose, have fun, and indulge in the spirit of the season. The main hallway was transformed into Halloweentown, where hot chocolate and candy stations had lines in between classes, artistic students offered face paintings, and students and staff alike proudly rocked their costumes throughout the day.

From inflatable sharks and cowboys, to psycho clowns, movie characters, and even Assistant Principal Bradley’s rendition of RUN DMC, Uniondale ensured that no stone was left unturned — even going the extra mile this year by hiring a professional photographer to capture fond memories of students against an eerie and chilling backdrop.

But the highlight of the day was a surprise flash mob performance by the Uniondale High School Show Choir, known as the "Rhythm of the Knights." Lynette Carr-Hicks, director of the Uniondale show choir, says she is proud of her students' fantastic performance and that it is a privilege running the show for the Knights.

Their spine-tingling dance moves and haunting harmonies had the crowd pumped up as they made their way throughout the school halls performing their choreography to Thriller in a mystic Halloween-themed performance.
