Some 120 feet below the streets of Manhattan, thousands of workers contracted by MTA Capital Construction have been drilling and blasting through bedrock since September 2007 to build a set of Long Island Rail Road tunnels that will eventually connect the Island, including the South Shore, with Grand Central Terminal and the Metro-North Railroad. Tunneling on the Manhattan side of the “East Side Access Project,” as it’s known, is complete, and work on the Queens side, which began in May, is well under way. more

Andrew Cuomo’s executive order, announced last week at SUNY Old Westbury, creating 10 state regional economic development councils, including one for Long Island, is brilliant. The concept of streamlining the development process — now a byzantine maze of bureaucracy — may be of great value. more

On most any summer weekend, it’s easy to find sunbathers soaking up rays at Long Island’s many beaches, but whether they have taken the necessary steps to protect their skin isn’t as evident. Some 100 million Americans suffer from skin cancers and diseases, according to the American Skin Association. That’s why Bellmorite Edward Diller, a longtime supporter of the nonprofit organization, has launched the Pan Long Island Challenge to raise awareness about skin disorders as well as money for research. more
On a recent sunny Thursday, Wilbur Sanchez spoke in slow, deliberate English as he pointed out vegetables amid the greenery fanning out around him. Sanchez noted the peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers hanging from tall plants in a red box before him. In a second box to his right were chives, oregano and lettuce. In the middle of the garden, watermelon vines looped in all directions. At the back, cornstalks popped out above still more pepper plants. more
Long Island Rail Road service has been suspended for the Babylon, Hempstead, Montauk, Oyster Bay, Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma stations. The Port Washington station is currently experiencing delays. more
