The high school district’s Board of Education has approved the creation of a committee that will study a decades-old district policy that allows incoming students to choose the school they attend, and the policy’s impact on enrollment. The move, at a meeting on Aug. 29, came after parents and teachers signed a petition to the board in June protesting the policy, which its critics believe contributed to overcrowding at North High School that has now reached a tipping point.

Some concerned parents assert that the school waiver policy has led to overcrowding at North and South high schools (“Parents claim schools are overcrowded,” July 27-Aug. 2 issue). In the absence of quantitative data verifying this claim, I’ll leave the technical determination of whether or not a school building has met its functional capacity to our education experts — the superintendent and the Central High School District’s professional staff — although, I suspect it has not met that threshold.

Harris Dinkoff, who served on the District 13 Board of Education for 33 years, died on Dec. 31 after a brief illness. He was 89. On July 5, members of the District 13 school community gathered outside the James A. Dever Elementary School for a commemorative tree planting ceremony to honor his legacy.
