Valley Stream resident George Schuchman gazed with pride at a steel beam from the World Trade Center wreckage brought to Hendrickson Park on Tuesday. “I’m proud that the village of Valley Stream has a piece of the World Trade Center,” he said.

The Hendrickson Park administration building will no longer house Valley Stream’s recreation department. Three feet of water in the building during a heavy rainstorm on Aug. 14 has prompted village officials to move the department to the Firemen’s Field clubhouse and seek other uses for the 45-year-old building.

Late summer is a musical time throughout the area. The Long Island Philharmonic visits Eisenhower Park for a delightful evening of popular classics on Friday. Over at Long Island Children's Museum, The Silly Dilly Band entertains kids of all ages with their musical hi-jinks, along with a theatrical adaptation of the popular Dora the Explorer television series, on Sunday.

It’s a revival for those catchy one-hit wonder songs at this year’s Aquatic Club water show at the Hendrickson Park pool this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Synchronized swimmers will perform to popular tunes of bygone and present days, intriguing the public for the pool’s 51st year.

It was a scorching hot day on Long Island on July 22, but it didn’t stop hundreds of people from seeing two bands who, despite playing for nearly two decades, can still draw a crowd. The day was reminiscent of any summer in the 1990s — people were sitting in lawn chairs with coolers, listening to the Spin Doctors and the Gin Blossoms.
