Island Park Mayor James Ruzicka estimated that Little Beach has eroded 75 percent over the last decade. An Army Corps of Engineers report recommends replacing the deteriorating eastern bulkhead of the beach, at right, which abuts Suffolk Road. Sen. Charles Schumer has said he will help the village, the Town of Hempstead, the DEC and the corps come together to find a solution to the problem.

Celebrating the arts in Valley Stream

Valley Stream artist Mike Stanko was once inspired to paint by the two vending machines at Firemen’s Field, he said. Whether he was stricken by the beauty of the red lights of the Coca-Cola dispenser against snow-covered baseball diamonds or the grilled cheese sandwich he had for lunch, Stanko said he loves to share his paintings and prints that are influenced by his hometown. more
