Our nation’s birthday is upon us, and everyone is ready to celebrate with dazzling pyrotechnics. Although they will be missed once again at Jones Beach this year, July Fourth celebrants have plenty of places to see fireworks and share in the spirit of Independence Day, extending through next week.

If you’ve gotten a parking ticket in Valley Stream lately, you’ve probably noticed it looks a bit different. The village has purchased four hand-held machines to electronically generate tickets, essentially replacing hand-written tickets.

Q. I have a commercial building that has space for doctors’ offices, eateries and retail stores, and I’m wondering about my parking. I got a zoning variance for the number of cars because we didn’t have enough spaces. We got a permit and everything is legal, but can I designate specific spaces with “Reserved for Doctor” signs or do I have to leave it as general parking? The doctors want the spaces closest to their front door. What’s legal?

For most Boy Scouts looking to earn their Eagle rank, the last step along the way is the completion of a community service project. Troop 116 Boy Scout Daniel Guarneri wanted to celebrate the history of Valley Stream with his project, so he installed a plaque honoring one of the founding fathers of the village.

I, like a significant number of Valley Stream residents, live in a house with dogs. Two of them in fact — both beagles and both rescued from shelters in the area. This is the second time that I have had dogs; the first time was growing up and as a teenager in England and my particular angle on life in Valley Stream would be well illustrated by comparing these two experiences.

Valley Stream Central High School District Board of Education members admit they made a bold move last year when they decided that students would no longer be allowed to leave the campus in their cars for lunch. It drew harsh reaction from students, and so far the results have been mixed.
