Anthony Capone reflects on leadership, service in Valley Stream Fire Department

Posted

Six years ago today, a lifelong childhood dream began to become a reality.

In the midst of what would become one of the most unprecedented times in our lives, I was sworn in by the Mayor, in an empty room, as Second Assistant Chief. The very day I took office, the world was shutting down because of Covid-19. That same day, our department was dealt a tremendous blow with the line-of-duty death of Michael Field — a man who had been part of so many of our lives since we were kids. During those difficult times, I am incredibly grateful for the support I received from so many people, even when the better days ahead were impossible to see.

As time went on and I continued to rise through the ranks, we rebuilt stronger than ever.

I had the privilege of working alongside some of my best friends and some of the most talented people the fire service has to offer.

I still remember, like it was yesterday, being a young kid riding in my stepfather’s Ford Crown Victoria to an automatic fire alarm at the Looney Bin on Rockaway Avenue. That was the moment I knew I would do whatever it took to become Chief one day.

The good days always outweighed the bad. In the office, we ran the department like a business. On the fireground, we operated like a well-oiled machine. Through it all, we stayed true to our priorities: bringing everyone home safely, protecting the life and property of our village, and doing the job to the best of our ability.

I can’t thank my family, friends, elected officials and the residents of our community enough for their unwavering support throughout this journey. Most especially, Maria and our son Marco — the true backbone of my life.

I leave the office proud that we are safe, strong and in a great position to keep moving forward. I’m even more confident knowing the leadership coming up behind me is ready. Mike Colucci, Kyle O’Brien and their new deputy will do an outstanding job.

I will always be a positive driving force behind the Valley Stream Fire Department, and I look forward to going home to Engine 342 on Brooklyn Avenue.

My love for public service is stronger than ever. I am proud to call Valley Stream home. It is where I grew up, where I have built my life, and where I am now raising my family. My hope is simple. That one day, my son Marco looks around this same community and feels that same sense of pride. That this is a place worth serving, worth protecting and worth calling home.

Thank you again for all of your support. It has truly been a pleasure and an honor.
