Blessed Sacrament parents, grads testify to its greatness

Blessed Sacrament leaders take pride in all their school has to offer. So do the parents. So do the graduates.

The school has created a wall of testimony, featuring more than two dozen letters from those wishing to share their good feelings about the small Catholic school. It is in the cafeteria, located underneath the church, and is the brainchild of Ann Moltz, director of before- and after-school programs.

The letters are from parents of current students, parents of former students and even a few graduates themselves. Grace Plackis is all three. She attended the school, her two older children did and are now in high school, and her two younger children are presently enrolled at Blessed Sacrament.

“We’ve been very happy with the school,” Plackis said. “The school has really offered a lot for our children. It’s a warm, friendly environment.”

Moltz said she designed the wall of testimony to look like a Facebook page, which is what children and teens relate to. The letters are like wall posts, and the number of friends is how many students are enrolled in the school.

She was happy that several graduates of the school contributed to the wall. “It’s nice to see that these kids, so many years later, fondly remember time spent in a classroom,” Moltz said, adding that many come back to visit and choose Blessed Sacrament to complete their high school service activities.

Service is what the school is all about, explained Principal Mary Earvolino. She said that many parents want their children to attend school at a place where they learn values and service to the community.

Two years ago, there was a fire at a Queens school where Moltz’s sister-in-law Christine Kelly teaches. Children in Kelly’s class lost most of their supplies in the weekend blaze. Immediately, Blessed Sacrament students began giving what they could.

“My children ended up pretty much getting more than they lost,” Kelly said. “We didn’t ask for it. They just did it on their own. My kids were really touched.”
