Firefighters make quick stop of basement blaze

Posted

Valley Stream firefighters battled a small blaze in the basement of a Heatherfield Road home last week.

Firefighters were called to 67 Heatherfield Road in the Mill Brook section at about 10 p.m. on Sept. 14. All units from Valley Stream responded along with mutual aid from Hewlett. The Elmont, Malverne, Woodmere and Lynbrook fire departments provided standby coverage.

Fire Chief Joseph Fernandez said the cause of the fire was electrical and it started near the dryer. He estimated damaged at about $150,000 and said the flames were confined to the area around the dryer. The fire took about 10 minutes to bring under control.

There was no damage to the upper floors of the home and it was still habitable, Fernandez said.
