Intro to 3D printer at library on Sat.

The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library will host an introductory demonstration of its new 3D Makerbot Replicator on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 1:30 p.m. The machine is capable of creating 3D models out of corn-based, biodegradable filaments.

Mamie Eng, the library’s director, explained that the class is designed to introduce people to the new technology and inform them about the wide array of possibilities it has.

“It’s a fascinating process to see,” she said. The high-tech method is starting to grow in educational fields, science and medicine, according to Eng, whose staff learned about its use in creating objects as sophisticated as prosthetic arms and heart valves.

The printer cost more than $2,000, which was provided by a grant received through Senator Dean Skelos’s office, Eng said. After the device was installed in late summer, the staff had to take some time learning to use it. “If you don’t plan for supports, the whole thing could collapse,” Eng said of items during printing.

An instructional session on Oct. 18 was well attended, she said, adding that the library is hoping to be able to expand their printing services. “We’re waiting for the technology to improve on the 3D scanners,” she said.

Registration for the class is encouraged, and light refreshments will be served. Discount coupons for first-time print jobs will be available. For further information, contact Eng at (516) 825-6422.
