The Sewanhaka central High School District is being sued for $3 million in damages by parents of a New Hyde Park Memorial student with special needs who was allegedly tied to a chair.

The parents filed the notice of claim against the district after their 15-year-old, nonverbal son with special needs was allegedly abused by a teacher on April 4.

The notice of claim alleges that a special needs teacher tied the student to a chair with a rope around his stomach last month. It also claims that an agency nurse and teaching assistant witnessed the incident and reported it to the chairperson of the special education department.

In a statement obtained by the Herald, the district said that the teacher was removed from the classroom immediately after it learned of the incident and the proper authorities were contacted, including the Nassau County Police Department and the state education department.
