Sylvan Place came alive last Saturday as the Valley Stream block hosted its annual holiday block party, continuing a tradition that has brought neighbors and visitors together for over a decade.
Held from 6 to 10 p.m., the event once again transformed Sylvan Place into a pedestrian-friendly celebration filled with festive lights, decorations and a strong sense of community. For over 30 years, the block has been renowned for its dazzling holiday displays, which originated as a friendly neighborhood competition and have evolved into a cherished seasonal gathering. The block party itself has been part of the tradition since 2014.
Families and visitors enjoyed familiar holiday comforts, including free hot dogs, hot chocolate and candy canes, which have long been staples of the event. Santa Claus made his annual appearance from 7 to 9 p.m., greeting children, handing out gifts and collecting wish lists.
Continuing its tradition of giving back, a donation box was set up in front of 80 Sylvan Pl. Donations collected during the event will benefit Sunrise Day Camp, which supports families of children battling cancer, and Camp ANCHOR, which serves individuals with special needs in the Town of Hempstead. The charitable component honors two former residents whose memories continue to inspire generosity within the neighborhood.
Despite challenges over the years, including severe weather and the global pandemic, the Sylvan Place block party has remained a symbol of unity and holiday spirit. This year’s gathering once again highlighted the enduring charm of the event, as the community came together to celebrate, reconnect and create lasting memories amid the glow of holiday lights.
