Valley Stream scouts and community leaders commemorated Arbor Day by planting a young tree in front of the newly renovated Nassau County Police Booth on West Merrick Road.
Children representing several scouting groups in Valley Stream participated in the planting and were assisted by Village Arborist Eugene Boening, who selected an Eastern Red Bud sapling, a species native to the region.
“Scouting is a great outlet for youngsters to thrive and grow, just as this beautiful tree they have planted today,” Cub Pack 367 Leader Carlos Caban said. “We are proud that they have embraced the spirit of environmental health and are eager learners. We are grateful to Mr. Boening, scout leaders Kathy and Judge Robert Bogle, and the Village officials who foster these important lessons for tomorrow’s environmental stewards.”
The tree is expected to grow to about 20 feet over the next several years and will further enhance the recently refreshed landscaping at the police booth.
