The West Hempstead School District celebrated Earth Day, which was Thursday, April 22, with an abundance of eco-friendly and educational activities.
More than 50 children and parents from Cornwell Avenue and George Washington elementary schools visited West Hempstead High School after school hours on April 23 to take part in this year's Earth Day event "Fur, Feathers and Fins."
The high school's Environmental Club and its advisor, science teacher Rosemary Zuluaga, prepared snacks and a series of educational activities for the elementary school kids. The activities focused on the ecology of animals, birds and fish, as well as environmental concerns regarding the various organisms.
In addition to creating a healthy, environmentally friend and nutritious "dirt-cup" snack, students made fur, feather and fin masks; a reading circle focusing on fur, feather and fins; and a science-experiment center. They also put together environmental puzzles, games and coloring books.
They also go to spend some time with a service therapy dog in training, who was on hand to greet all the participants.
The entire Earth Day event was a success as it sent parents and students home with an appreciate for the planet and its animals, birds and fish.
